βEnglish Teaβ is a track from Paul McCartneyβs 2005 album βChaos And Creation In The Backyardβ. From an interview of Paul McCartney by Gary Crowley:
T he lyrics say βVery twee, very meβ and I think it is very me that stuff. The Beatles made a sort of Englishy sort of music, once they got past their American roots, American influences. You know a lot of our early stuff was βSome other guy nowβ and you know pure soul R&B stuff that we loved (sings Twist and Shout) was directly taken from America. But then we started to sort of work in little things that were more us, and erm that kind of thing, thatβs particularly me that kind of English Tea type of thing. Again it was this fascination with sort of how people speak, how some English people speak. But the idea started, I was on holiday, and if you want a cup of tea, you donβt do what you do in England, say βA cup of tea pleaseβ, They always say βWhat kind of tea?β You know like in England nobody would ever say βWhat kind of tea?β Well, they actually would these days, but in the old days it was never like βWhat kind of tea?β Itβd be like βWhat do you mean? Cuppa tea.β So now they say βWhat kind of tea?β and you have to say βEnglish Breakfast teaβ and then they go βOh OKβ and you get it you know you get an ordinary cup of tea. So I just thought thatβs amazing that calling it English tea, but I thought itβs kind of original because we donβt call it that. So I just started playing with that idea, of English tea. And then as I say thereβs one particular older English person Iβm thinking of who instead of saying βDo you want a cup of tea?β might say βWould you care for a cup of tea?β Itβs just the way they say it, and I love that. βWould you care?β and in this case βWould you care to sit with me, for a cup of English tea?β And so I really went to town on that whole fruity way of talking, that whole fruity language that I like. Itβs I think itβs very endearing, very English, and I even managed to work in the word βperadventureβ which I was very proud of. Cos thatβs like, cos I read Dickens quite a bit, it came to me fromβ¦I thought there is a word βperadventureβ and I think as I say I read it in Dickens (you get these old usages of words in there). And I thought βI do hope Iβm right cos Iβve put it in the songβ. βDo you know the game croquet β¦ Per adventure we might playβ β¦ You know I thought βOh I hope this is rightβ I looked it up in the dictionary, : βperadventure β perhaps, maybeβ βYes!β
I thought βOh great Iβm sure not many people work that into a song.β And then also, βDo you know the game croquet, peradventure we might play, Very gay Hip hoorayβ you know in the old sense of the word βgayβ so it was nice, it was that croquet, very English, lawns, hollyhocks, roses, very Alice in Wonderland, that was also in the back of my mind, which influenced a lot of me and Johnβs writing. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, thatβs Alice to us you know (Sings) Picture yourselfβ¦β The whole idea of βpicture yourselfβ you know in a boat on a river very Alice very Lewis Carroll, itβs just the way I like to write that, so a fruity little song.

OβHAGAN: Can we talk about specific songs: βEnglish Teaβ?
PAUL: Thatβs about living in England and listening to the way some English people speak and parodying that. I love it but I also find it funny. I mean, I say, βDo you wanna cup of tea, la?β But somebody else will say, βWould you care to take tea?β or βAs a rule, we take tea at threeβ or whatever.
OβHAGAN: So is that the scouser in you taking the piss out of poshies?
PAUL: Nah, itβs more an affectionate nod. I kind of like that language. I went to a grammar school, and had a really good English teacher, and I love to read Dickens, so I love the English language. I even worked in the word βperadventureβ. (Sings in snooty voice) βDo you know the game croquet/Peradventure we might play.β (Laughs)In a way, I was playing Noel Coward. He could sing that straight.
OβHAGAN: Or the Bonzos?
PAUL: Yeah, The Bonzos! So, in that song, I reclaimed the word βgayβ and got βperadventureβ in. You know what βperadventureβ means?
OβHAGAN: Go on?
PAUL: I wonβt go on, you tell me.
OβHAGAN: βPerhapsβ?
PAUL: Correct! Iβd sort of heard it and it had stuck in some little corner of my brain. It fell out of my head into the song then afterwards I had to go to the dictionary, and go, βPlease, let there be a word βperadventureβ!β And there it was. Itβs just putting myself in a fruity voice. Itβs a lady who lives in the town here, a classy dame, an old lady who speaks like that. Itβs lovely. βWould you care for a cup of tea?β All that stuff. Plus tea and hollyhocks and roses and gardens and croquet and church bells chiming and nanny baking fairy cakes.
OβHAGAN: That English pop vernacular, Ray Davies?
PAUL: Yeah, yeah. Itβs βWaterloo Sunsetβ and Terry and Julie, and all that. Itβs great, that. Spot on. And it resonates. The second song [βHow Kind Of Youβ] is also me being intrigued by that old, fading languageβ¦ βHow kind of you.β And, it sings well. Itβs pretty elegant, genteel. Plus, what I really like is that if you donβt sing it posh, it becomes more ironic, more fun.
OβHAGAN: I took it as a very plaintive song, actually.
PAUL: I know, I know. Some people have said that. But Iβd never say, βHow kind of you to think of me when I was out of sorts.β Thatβs not an expression that Iβd use. It gets more me later on. It is about thoughtfulness, though, and things that are fading. Itβs got a phrase and a theme right there in the title. What more do you want?
OβHAGAN: What about the lines: βHow kind of you to stick by me during the final bout/And listen to the referee when I was counted outβ?
PAUL: Well, I know what thatβs all about β tragedies, the Beatles break-up, things going wrong, people writing me off, and all of this. (Sings from the heart) βI thought my time was up.β So, thereβs this sort of therapy aspect I find about songwriting thatβs one of the other reasons I love it. If Iβm feeling really low, Iβll take my guitar to the darkest corner I can find in the house, often a toilet β good echo β and go there and sit with it, and talk to your guitar, explain it all to your guitar. And you come out and itβs magical.
