Am I supposed to do complete alternate picking: (5 is down, 3 up, 3 down, 4 up. )
Or some economy picking, if thats what it’s called?: (5 is down, 3 up, 3down, 4 down. )

I always have problems with these kinds of licks.

No, he doesn’t. Strict alternate, always.

The riff is actually quite easy when you realise that each time you touch the fourth string, your going in a different direction, make sure you accent it and it should begin to feel natural.

No. He is economy picking that run. In the video, it becomes painfully obvious. The two are related and have a similar sound, so only hearing the run would make it difficult to know, but in the video, he is using economy picking on that run and some other parts.

He’s alternate picking.

The only things he doesnt alt pick are 3 string arpeggios which he uses outside picking with.

\n He’s alternate picking.

Although I can do both, I love economy picking that riff (and similar stuff), because you can add those little semi-pinch harmonics on the D string.

Makes it sound a bit more spicier.

Hehe that is strange
Thanks for the replies, seems like alternate picking is the way to go, although you can clearly play both.

\n oh and it took my forever and much frustration to get alternate picking, it was frustrating having my hand doing it’s own thing

just go slow and what helped me was exagerating the right hand motion so it was impossible for my hand to change back directions

Paul Gilbert is one of the strictest alternate pickers ever. He’s capable of economy picking, but the man is all about alternate picking.

Metalheads are the worst thing that ever happened to metal. \n \n \n

haha wtf? he said that?

Tell that to Guthrie Govan, Shawn Lane, Martin Goulding, Frank Gambale and any number of other players who are better than you.

Same is true of any technique. It’s only ever as good as the practice you put in.

\n Why do you guys gets so intense about alternate or economy?

Just do what is easiest for you and sounds best. Problem solved.

Doesn’t matter how you pick it, as long as you are picking the correct notes in the right order, with the right tempo.

I don’t but the fact of the matter is that PG does alternate pick nearly everything.

I’m a firm advocate of using whatever is tonally and technically appropriate for the line being played.

I agree, but just because he picks it one way doesn’t mean everyone else has to.

Did I say anyone else had to?

No you didn’t but others on here make it seem that if you don’t play it exactly like PG you might as well not play it at all. Which is rediculous. Either technique will yeild the same end result.

So you’re telling me if I play a few notes here and there that are economy picked you would be able to tell the difference?

I’m not saying that playing the whole thing in down strokes or something will yeild the same results, but a few notes here and there that aren’t played PG’s exact way will not be any different or less aggressive sounding.

Well, the intro riff and the scale runs that end it just will not sound the same. I’m not positing that it’s a huge difference in every situation.

It just I can play the intro with all alternate picking and I can play it all down strokes, except for the quick runs obviously, but you really can’t hear a difference in tone if I switch from alternate to all downstrokes in the middle of it.

My whole point was that a song can be learned and sound great without playing it exactly like the original artist did.

Paul Gilbert actually does hammer ons on those two notes I bolded (there’s some Youtube video where he explicitly says that’s what he does)

Well if you’re going to learn a song you should learn it in that guitarists style
The more you learn from others, the more you have in your musical vocabulary to choose from

So you don’t have to alternate pick like PG but you should know how to

I agree; Playing it with another picking style is NOT the point.

Shred = no limitations.

What matter is, is that you can CHOOSE which technique you use at those speeds.

Playing it with economy for the sake of not being able to do it alternate = wrong
Playing it because you choose to do it like that = right

Don’t let the technique choose you, (only in Russia)

Now back to the woodshed y’all
